Occlusal Guard

An occlusal guard is a device that is made of clear, acrylic materila (PMMA) and fits usually on the upper teeth.

The role of the occlusal guard is to protect the teeth from being worn by bruxism (grinding). Bruxism is very common in the modern population and one of the major causes is stress. It happens usually at night time and 80% of the population that grind their teeth are not aware of it.

How do i know that i grind my teeth at night?

Usually the patients are not aware that they grind their teeth at night.

Some of the symptoms and signs can be:

  • Evident wear of the occlusal surfaces of the teeth and especially the anterior teeth that develop a more flat appearance
  • Teeth appear shorter
  • Muscle ache especially around the neck
  • Morning headaches or migraines
  • Facial pain
  • Locked jaw
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Limited mouth opening
  • Tinnitus (Ringing in ears)
